Artificial Intelligence has become a part of our world. We use it in our everyday life.  This assignment has helped me learn about the many different ways that not only students, but teachers can use this tool in the classroom. Before this project I knew the basics about  AI, I knew AI could answer questions and help with assignments, support diverse learners by providing different accessibility features, but I did not realize how many ways it could support teachers by helping create lesson plans, and creating classroom materials. As I created this website I wanted to ensure that it was create to help develop the understanding that AI should be used as a tool to assist teachers and students, not to think for them, or replace their professional judgement.

 

One of the most challenging parts of this project was using Generative AI tools to create the project. When creating projects I would normally use Canva, Chat GPT, Google Slides, or other common tools that people use, but what surprised me were the many tools that I wasn’t aware of. This project challenged me because I was not allowed to use any of these tools I was comfortable with. I discovered that Google Gemini was available to assist me in brainstorming ideas and help me create a kindergarten lesson.  Adobe Firefly was there to create images that matched my website, and Wix AI Website builder assisted with compiling all my information into a professional website. The tool that I found most effective was Google Gemini, because it was able to walk me through the entire project, making the instructions understandable.  Although AI helped me with all these different tasks, I rewrote the information in my own words, and made changes to ensure that my project reflected my own understanding.

 

As with everything in life there are pros and cons. One of the biggest benefits of AI is that it makes life just a little bit easier and convenient. AI support educators by reducing planning time and helping with ideas. It can also help students understand difficult lesson instructions. AI  also support diverse learners by translating material for English learners, provide accessibility features such as text-to speech, speech-to-text, and help teachers create different lesson for different learning levels. These tools can make learning inclusive for all students. However AI has several disadvantages also. Sometimes it can produce inaccurate and bias information.

 

Another concern was that if teachers and students rely on the tool too much, they can miss a lot of important learning opportunities. As a student I, one of my concerns is that students can complete their work honestly and be incorrectly accused of using AI. I feel that when this happen teachers should use their professional judgement to ensure that the student is receiving a fair chance. Teachers and students should always review the information given to ensure that it correct and that it meets the individual need.

This assignment changed my overall view of Artificial Intelligence. AI is a valuable tool but it must be used carefully and responsibly. Teachers and student should make sure not to enter personal information to protect their privacy. I believe AI should contribute to ones thinking, not think for them. As a future educator I plan to use AI to help me provide engaging lessons, support diverse learners, but always rely on my own understanding and judgement.
